If a Type Rating is still valid and is written in your certificate, only a License Proficiency Check is needed to extend the validity period. This is called a Type rating Revalidation.
There is another requirement which is to have flown 10 route sectors as pilot of the relevant class or type of aeroplane within the validity period, or 1 route sector as pilot of the relevant class or type of aeroplane or FFS, flown with an examiner. This route sector may be flown during the proficiency check, meaning that it can be combined with the LPC.
If, on the other hand, a Type Rating is expired and no longer valid but is included in the certificate, it must be Renewed. This is called a Type rating Renewal.
Before a Type rating Renewal, an ATO must assess whether additional training or education is needed before a LPC can be performed. Several factors come into play here, such as: Total pilot experience, how long it has been since the last LPC or flight in the current type of aircraft, etc. If only a limited time has elapsed since the Type rating expired, the ATO can often assess that no extra training is required before a LPC can be performed.
